As I've mentioned numerous times in many other threads, I am EXTREMELY stupid, so keep that verifiable fact in mind when reading below. That does not mean, however, that you should formulate answers and discussion in a way that I can comprehend, hopefully other individuals with higher intelligence will participate, so feel free to use big words and complex concepts.
So, Trump is rolling out his Tariffs which we knew he would, and which many of us were happy about. We assumed China.
The Chinese have been undercutting prices (mostly because US companies send work there to undercut prices, which is irony in itself) which causes domestic factories to close and economy suffers. Introduce Tariffs, domestic companies can once again compete due to pricing and people get jobs, shuttered factories open, more tax revenue, etc. Yes, prices go up, but the overall wealth stays within the US.
This seems to also be true for Mexico. Many many companies, auto manufacturers, steel fabricators, etc have been building plants in Mexico to take advantage of low labor costs, minimal environmental regulations, and avoid shipping costs/delays of china manufacture. Makes these companies re-think their south of the border shenanigans. I do feel this will cause food prices to rise because a lot of our food comes from mexico, not because of the cheap labor, but because it is near impossible to grow certain things here. We will see how that rolls out.....avocado toast might be getting more expensive....and I do enjoy tequila. lol
But....why Canada? Most of the things they make are more expensive than domestically produced things. They don't make cars.....I'd assume we export more to Canada than we import (Though I don't know). So why the Tariffs? Canada has a lot of issues, and I feel for their people as they are being increasingly oppressed and increasingly taxed....this doesn't seem like it will be good.
Also, didn't Hoover impose widespread tariffs which were one of the reasons we slid into the great depression? He also campaigned on cheap food on every table which is disturbingly familiar to recent campaigns.
So....thoughts? Help me understand?
Thank you.
